Cruz was born on April 28, 1974 in Alcobendas, province of Madrid, Spain, to Encarna Sanchez, who was an Andalusian hairdresser who was also her personal manager. They also had Eduardo Cruz, an Extremaduran automotive mechanic and retailer. Penelope Cruz was only 15 when she took home an agency-sponsored modeling contest.
